On the 19/07/2020, at 12:00 outside the Caird Hall, a commemoration of the martyrs of the Suruç bombing of 2015 will be held by members of Dundee’s Kurdish and Turkish community with support of Young Communist League: Dundee.
The Suruç bombing targeted young left wing Turks and Kurds, mostly comprised of students and members of the youth wing on the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) and members of the Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF), who had gathered in 2015 in Suruç to deliver a press statement detailing their intent to travel to and reconstruct the Syrian border town of Kobane; one of the epicentres of the revolution in Syria. The attack, occurring roughly the same time as our commemoration, claimed 33 lives, and injured 104, as a direct result of a suicide bombing which was claimed by ISIS the following day.
The complicity of the Turkish government (AKP), in both tolerating and utilising ISIS for their anti-Kurdish agenda, in the attack was further made evident as the AKP almost immediately launched Operation Martry Yalçin; a coordinated assault against Kurdish positions along the Syrian-Turkish border to the south and against Kurdish positions to the East, under the guise of ‘anti-terrorism’, a response attacking the very victims of the Suruç Bombing.
As young communists of the Young Communist League, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the families of the victims, with the Socialist Youth Association Federation (SGDF) and youth wing of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), with the Turkish communist struggle, the Kurdish struggle for self-determination, and the global struggle against capitalism, imperialism, fascism and racism.
We will be taking the opportunity, alongside our Kurdish and Turkish comrades and community, to pay our sincere respects to the sacrifices of the young martyrs, and of the martyrs before and since who have given their life for the betterment of humanity worldwide. We will further highlight the complicity of our own Government in actively supplying the AKP government with over 70 export licences for arms containing phosphorus products, alongside pyrotechnic ammunition, decoy and countermeasure equipment, signalling devices, illuminators, teargas and missile components, all of which have been used in the ongoing oppression of any opposition to the AKP government.
We invite you to stand with us against imperialism, against fascism, against racism, and against the capitalist interests that underpin human tragedy across the world.
Young Communist League: Dundee.
